Removing tattoos as popular as getting one

By Clare van Ouden, 12 April, 2011

Getting a tattoo removed is almost as popular and fashionable as getting one done,  according to tattoo

Over the last four years tattoo laser treatment removalist Claire Ross has seen an increasing number of people wanting to get their tattoos’ removed or faded.

For teenagers and young adults, getting a tattoo can be seen as a coming of age.

It is illegal for people under the age of 18 to have tattoos done and removed without a parent/guardian, or someone over the age of 18 present.

“When people choose tattoos’ they are really only thinking about the now and not the future,” Miss Ross said.

Media advertising and marketing have been making tattoos’ much more popular and socially more acceptable than what they use to be.

The types of tattoos’ people have been getting are very generational.

“You go to an art gallery to look at art.

“Tattoos’ are just the same only on the skin,” says Brett from Five Star Tattoo parlour.

There are four main categories that people are grouped under when wanting to go through the costly process of getting their tattoo removed.

“The idea of what they wanted to get didn’t translate through colours, and quality,” says Miss Ross.

“Placement, when the tattoo is put in a more obvious place than what was originally intended.

“They don’t want their parents to see them.

“And the person’s older tattoos’ are no longer in sync with their newer ones.

“This is just a case of fading the older tattoo so that another one can be placed over top,” said Miss Ross.

Coloured tattoos’ can be an issue when removing them through laser treatment, as some colours won’t move.

“White ink will turn cream, yellow won’t budge, green will break down but won’t budge, blue won’t come out nor will any inflorescent colours,” she said.

There are however more expensive, alternative forms and methods of tattoo removal if laser treatment doesn’t work.

“Tatt2Away” is a form of treatment that injects a proprietary fluid to bring the pigmented tattoo ink to the surface of the skin forming a scab which will leave the underlying skin clear.

“Tattoos’ don’t have to mean anything,” says tattooist, Brett.

“Just make sure that you’re still going to like it in 20 years time.”
